All reviews are scored out of a total of five 's. A score of three is given to something that is a typical example of its style with nothing too outstanding or bad about it.

WOW.
For the first time in many, many years, I’ve been left speechless. A few minutes ago, settling down with my first cuppa and fag of the day, I browsed to my email account for the site. There was one new message waiting. A quick click, a brief scan and my mouth dropped open. I still can’t shut it.
A ‘corporate’ group is offering to buy my web domain name. For $5000.
I can’t say who they are just yet, but it’s a familiar ‘brand’ in the mainstream ‘punk’ business. […]

I’ve recently been chatting with Mr Dee Fekt, drummer for the ageless Kismet HC and Death Zone pop combos. KHC went on a mini-tour a few weeks ago with Active Minds, old punks in their own right, and visited some of our nearby European neighbours. Seeing as they were sharing stage space and personal hygiene problems, I asked Dee if he would grab a few words from Bobs and/or Set about whatever took their fancy. He kindly obliged so here’s the first half, with questions based on conversations in the […]

I’m really pleased to announce that my request for new recruits has borne fruit, and a right plump n’ juicy piece he is too! So, without further ado, say hello to Ernest Embryo.
A few words about myself…
Well I’m another old punk though not quite as old as The Old Punk, born in ’68. Basically I’m a music lover, not just punk but something from pretty much every genre you could think of. I play bass, drums or guitar and I’ve also written tunes on my computer so I […]

First things first. This track was sent to me unsolicited by the band with a request for some feedback. Fair enough. I don’t know if I just happened to be tacked on to a list of every and any possible review opportunity as part of some marketing campaign, or whether someone involved with the band actually saw my blog and decided to hit me up. But if it’s the latter then all I can say is that they must’ve seen the word ‘punk’ in the title and not bothered reading […]

If you wanted conclusive proof that old punks don’t need to learn new tricks to still sound relevant and fresh, this record is it. Kismet H.C. have been shredding instruments and eardrums since the dark ages of the late 1980’s, with gaps of varying lengths along the way while members did other things like making babies. After their most recent tea-break they’re back with more passion than ever.
This collaborative DIY 10″ was due out […]

OPND is recruiting now!
I could do with more old punks (or even some younger ones with a bit of suss) joining up with the OPND Soviet – it seems a shame that my postings here are so intermittent when there’s all this space available.
You don’t have to rip anything (although I’m certainly not going to object, as long as you follow my own guidelines) – reviews, articles, opinion pieces, recipes, artwork etc. that fit in with the general ethos of OPND are very welcome indeed. How often you […]

Received in the post today:
Back in June of 2009, the St. John’s-based band Class War Kids recorded several cover songs before going on tour, but it wasn’t until the recent earthquake hit Haiti that it was clear what to do with those recordings. As of January 28, these tracks have been released on an EP entitled Twinkle’s Last Stand. All proceeds from its sale are going to the Batay Ouvriye Haiti Solidarity Network.
“Originally it was going to be a free download EP to say thanks to our friends […]

Some of you will already know my fondness for Insurgence Records, and my joy at the news that Randy (part of the Insurgence crew) has also set up his own label, Rebel Time Records, with co-conspirator Phil Broadcast Zero. I’ve already reviewed their early releases, but I recently got a bundle from Randy with everything else put out to date. And what a damned fine bundle it is.

Right about now is one of my favourite times in the garden. It may not be at its ‘prettiest’ anymore in the eyes of some but I behold things with a slightly different focus. Not only is there plenty of food to be cropping but there are also plenty of seeds to collect. Free seed this year = free plants and food next year. Now that’s a punk rock result!
Pretty much all of the flowers and veg I grow in the garden produce viable seed. This is the big […]

I love strawberries. But only fresh picked and in season, when they’re absolutely bursting with juice and flavour. Not only are they at their most pleasing on the mouth, they’re also the perfect additive to a fine vodka*.
The problem is, strawberries need space (albeit not much), and space is at a premium in my garden. I’ve tried growing a few plants in the gaps among the herbs, but they’ve not done brilliantly well. So I looked at getting a strawberry planter, a particular kind of pot for growing strawberries […]
